CHALLENGE HOME ABOUT US |
Thank you for your interest in the Adirondack Ultra Challenge. This series is new for 2008, and features an ultra ride every month for the entire year. It will be a true test of one's endurance and determination. We'll have rides ranging from 100 to 540 miles, with our existing events forming the basis of the schedule and some exciting new rides added to round out the calendar. Anyone who completes one of our rides every month for 12 consecutive months, will receive a special plaque at the end of the year to commemorate their achievement. If you can't make it every month, we'll allow one make up ride during the course of the year. However, the make up ride must be completed during the same month as the ride you're going to miss. Click here for more details. Use the links to the left and below to get more information. If you'd like to download an entry form, click here, and if you have any questions feel free to contact us. Thanks, and we hope to see you on the road! |

OTHER INFORMATION
All rides start promptly. Please give yourself adequate time to arrive, register and get ready to ride. Riders are expected to be on the start line at least 15 minutes before the start for last minute instructions.
Most rides leave from the RBA's home at 7 Pearl Street, Schuylerville, NY. This is a residential neighborhood, so please be courteous when arriving and departing, especially if it is late at night or early in the morning. Click here for directions.
Entry fees must be in US dollars, and are non refundable and non transferable.
Rides will be held rain or shine. If there's a chance of snow, ice or other dangerous conditions on our winter rides, they'll be postponed and rescheduled. If that occurs, and a pre registered rider can't make the new date, they'll be given a full refund or credit towards another ride, whichever they prefer.
Most rides will be unsupported, but services will be available on the route. Riders should plan on being self sufficient. Hammer Nutrition products, pocket food, bagels, muffins, fruit, coffee and juice will be available at the start, and sandwiches, salads, snacks and drinks will be served at the finish. We've also put together a rider's checklist to help you prepare.

Except for our races and brevets, the posted time limits are "soft" time limits. What that means is as follows: while we expect everyone to finish within the posted time frame, we won't disqualify a rider if they take a little longer to finish. As long you're properly prepared, reasonably coherent and riding in a safe manor, we'll patiently wait for you at the end.
However, we do reserve the right to officially disqualify a rider and pull them from the course if we feel they are not properly prepared, incoherent or riding in an unsafe manor.
For a list of items to bring to be properly prepared, please refer to our rider's checklist. And, if you have any questions on this policy, contact us.

Lights are required from dusk to dawn. On some of our rides the time limit expires after dusk, but most riders should finish before sunset. On these rides we do not require lights, but it is solely the rider's responsibility to have proper lighting in the event they are still riding after dark. Anyone caught riding in the dark without lights will be immediately disqualified from that event. To view the rider checklist, which includes our minimum lighting requirements, click here.

If you can't make it every month, we'll allow one make up ride during the course of the year. However, the make up ride must be completed during the same month as the ride you're going to miss. The make up ride can be an organized event or a solo effort. Please contact us for details on submitting verification.

For our winter centuries, we plan on using one of several different routes. Which one we use, will mostly depend on the weather. If it's a nice day, then we'll use a rolling loop through Saratoga County which will take us along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, and Saratoga and Ballston Lakes.
If it's a little cooler, then we'll use a figure eight course with the start/finish in the center. This is designed so that riders will have a comfortable place to warm up and re-supply at the halfway point. It will also allow you to leave a bag with extra clothes, lights, etc. and ride with as little extra weight as possible.
Finally, if the weather presents more of a challenge, then we'll go to our triple loop course. As the name implies, this route will consist of three different loops that all begin and end at the start/finish. Again, the plan is to have a comfortable place to warm up and re-supply in between each loop.
Whichever route we use, the terrain will be easy to moderate, and we'll post the cue sheet about a week before each ride. But, we reserve the right to change it at the last minute, depending on the weather and group preferences.
If there's a chance of snow, ice or other dangerous conditions on any of our winter rides, they'll be postponed and rescheduled. If that occurs, and a pre registered rider can't make the new date, they'll be given a full refund or credit towards another ride, whichever they prefer.

Another challenging ride to a great Adirondack village. It's also being organized as a RUSA 400 KM brevet to help riders in the northeast qualify for the Shenandoah 1200 in June. In addition, we've decided to this ride to mark the 25th anniversary of the first RAAM qualifier.
It was in May of 1983, just a year after The Great American Bike Race, that John Marino decided to open up entry to Race Across America, and organized the first qualifier in Hemet, CA. That race was 762 miles long and was held on a 104 mile course, that riders went around 7 and a half times. It was held in the desert, where it was hot during the day, cold at night and featured a 15 mile climb on every lap. Over 100 cyclists started the race, including our own director, John Ceceri.
Our commemorative journey to Lake Placid will start 3000 miles away in Schuylerville, on the shores of the Hudson River. We'll then travel north to Lake George and Warrensburg, where we'll begin our main loop through the Adirondacks. Before the day (and night) is finished, we'll pass through North Creek, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, North Hudson and Schroon Lake. We'll then return on the same route we began with, through Warrensburg and Lake George.
The terrain will feature several climbs in the 3 - 5 mile range, most notably going into Warrensburg and Indian Lake, and out of Blue Mountain Lake and Keene Valley, and lots of shorter rollers. This route will be typical Adirondack terrain: rugged in spots, along with gently rolling roads along lakes, rivers and streams. We'll hit our high elevation of about 2200 feet in a couple of spots: the top of Blue Mountain Lake, and just outside of Lake Placid.
This ride will be unsupported, but we'll note recommended stops on the cue sheet. We'll also have Hammer Nutrition products, bagels, snacks, coffee, juice, pocket food, etc. at the start, and sandwiches, salad, snacks and drinks at the finish.
Please plan for this event carefully. On some sections of this route we'll have long stretches where there will be little or no services. For a list of items to bring, view our Rider Checklist. Lights are also required for this ride.

Schroon Lake is such a neat town, that we plan on going there three times this year! The first ride takes place on June 21st, and we've scheduled the start for 7:00 AM so that we can have plenty of beach time. If you want to blast through the ride, that's fine too. But, I highly recommend taking it easy and soaking up the atmosphere with a dip in the lake, or just by relaxing in the shade at one of the nicest beaches in the Adirondacks.
The other rides are scheduled for August 24th and September 21st. On the August ride, we should still be able to get in a quick dip, but by September the water will probably be a little too cold. However, that ride should give us the opportunity to savor some of Schroon Lake's other attractions, and maybe even try out one of their local dinners (with home made meals and fresh baked pies!), if you haven't done so already.
The route itself will be fairly simple: mostly Route 9 there and back, with a possible detour onto the Warren County Bike Path for some of the ride. The terrain will be mostly rolling with a couple of good climbs between Lake George and Chestertown.
If you have any questions, or need more information, feel free to contact us.

Have you always wanted to ride through the night? Are you an experienced cyclist that likes riding at night? Either way, this scary ride is just the thing for you! It's an opportunity to join other night owls on an all night, friendly, ride.
The route will be a rolling loop through Saratoga County, using some of the roads that we've been become familiar with over the past season. But, since it's so close to Halloween, you never know what you might see!
Lights will be mandatory on this ride, and please make sure you have enough battery power to get you through the entire night. To view the rider checklist, which includes our minimum lighting requirements, click here.
